Aaron - very good points in your comment.

"...are talking about moving from "not officially supporting" iphone to banning it outright."

This made me chuckle. In the early part of the previous century, many companies banned telephones from their offices. There was a time when email was banned from some businesses, and I recall many debates where instant messaging was banned. Each of these tools, however radical, however disruptive, present huge opportunities for small competitors to tilt the playing field in their favor. It's not uncommon for long-established corporate defense mechanisms to make poor choices.

It's going to take more than 18 months for early adopters to really start using google wave productively, and I would say that it would take 3-4+ years before we start to see mainstream usage of google wave. Perhaps google voice will gain a stronger foothold among the consultant and SME set, this seems quite likely in the 18 month horizon, and certainly the iphone is well installed in many situations, but as you mentioned many corporate IT orgs are not sure about iphone. I know the large org I work for are talking about moving from "not officially supporting" iphone to banning it outright, though I doubt this will actually happen as the loyal user base would mutiny.

Great article. I'd like to add that there is a company that recently launched a 3G+ Plus Phone and Internet Service in the US. More info is available at www.new3GPlus.com In a nutshell, for $79.95/Mo. subscribers get unlimited HD Voice, Messaging and Broadband Internet. The internet is expected to be 4x faster than 3G. The internet connection stays active even when using the phone, so you have the option of using the phone as a modem. Pretty soon the service will be available to everyone. For now, however, Buzzirk mobile is focused on building a strong network of distributors, who will be first to subscribe to the service. Until the 4G network is deployed nationwide, people can enjoy broadband service with 3G+ Plus. Also, the company expects to offer sim cards in the near future, which will be compatible with all of the latest smart phones such as IPhone, Blackberry and Nokia E71. In the meantime, they're offering 5 smart phones that have proprietary software for their network and service.

Bill,

Thanks for the feedback. I guess you are correct. No matter what the technology we will adapt and overcome the obstacles that are certain with it. I think Google Wave will obviously change the face of productivity just as MS Outlook has in the past, which I might add was amazing. For me to say that it might decrease productivity, would be to say that it would decrease as we know it right now. However, if all the variables change, as MS Outlook changed business email, tasks, and calendar - it will certainly open new doors to collaboration we have not seen possible before.

I've spent hours trying to reassemble a time line of events in the past to recapture revenues, whereas, Google Wave would automatically keep things together and organized and open to yourself and clients. So from at least one degree it will keep client/customer fixed price agreements open and honest.

I'm fairly confident in Google's abilities to provide great web apps. To say that I use them all would be an understatement. I adore their business prowess and innovations. I just hope Google in all of their creative wisdom don't try to reinvent the round wheel or the hot fire just because no one has thought of a better wheel. A wheel is a wheel is a wheel, let us roll on if the need be.

Despite my skepticism, if they roll out Wave tomorrow, I want on board to try and make it work.

Thanks again,
Mike

Michael:

Good points -

"I have to wonder if this will be a productivity enhancer or productivity killer."

Well, there's no shortage of products out there that do the opposite of what they intend. ;-) We haven't been able to put Wave to any tests to see if the demos are indeed as likely to lead to the scenarios we envision. However, all indications are that the development team has been thinking about the workflow for many (many) years. As such, I have a gut feeling that this will be as productive as we hope.

"... the potential for constant disruption in your day is exponential."

True, but that situation already exists; and it's tough to make it worse. The opportunities for distraction are endless without Wave, so using that as a reason to be fearful of Wave doesn't hold water (for me anyway). Your remark is understandable - it's precisely the same reaction that corporate IT people when early email made its first appearance in 1985. ;-) My hunch is that Wave engineers would counter your point by saying the *potential* for incredibly focused communications experiences is exponential.

Great blog BTW - good articles (http://www.topsweb.com)

Cheers.. bf

Great article. I think you make a strong case for Google Wave. As I've reviewed it's demo I have to wonder if this will be a productivity enhancer or productivity killer. It certainly will save time in the compiling of all the collaboration sources which I think is fantastic. However, the potential for constant disruption in your day is exponential. This thing looks like IM+Facebook+Crack. I wonder if it makes people to accessible to one another I guess is the only con I see at this time.

Anyway, enjoyed the read. If you get a chance please visit my blog at TOPSweb.com
