You might think that Office on Phone would be an anathema to Microsoft, but apparently not. Over a year now there have been rumblings that Redmond would bring it’s flagship office suite to the iPhone and this week at the Web 2.0 Expo, Stephen Elop commented that iPhone support was on the horizon.
Does this mean you will be able to purchase Office Mobile for iPhone via the App Store? Probably not. Microsoft is deep in development of Office 14 and the buzz is that this version will be web-based and it will support a variety of browsers including Safari (this also means Mobile Safari).
Unfortunately, not much more is known. No release date has been mentioned and no specifics on features have been provided.
CNET News has an interview with the chief of Office development, Antoine Leblond where he mentions iPhone, albeit at the very end of the interview.
